Addiction Counsellor, Men’s Residential

We are looking for an energetic, compassionate, and resilient person who is committed to strength-based, person-focused care to join our team as an Addiction Counsellor for our Men’s Residential Addiction Treatment program.

** This is a full-time, permanent position with paid sick time and personal days and vacation, group health benefits and defined contribution pension plan. Hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. **

Your key responsibilities include:

  1. Welcoming, admission and discharge
  2. Individual and group counselling
  3. Monitoring the residence
  4. Documentation
  5. Working as an effective member of the staff treatment team
  6. Participation and involvement in other program activities

Your skills and experience include:

  1. University Degree in Counselling/Social Work or Nursing is required
  2. Currently registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)
  3. Current standard first aid certificate or willingness to obtain at hiring
  4. Experience in individual and group counselling with men
  5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required
  6. Ability to assess complex situations and make appropriate decisions independently and as part of a team
  7. High level of emotional intelligence and resilience
  8. Sensitivity to and knowledge of issues relating to and impacting on women/men
  9. Knowledge of substance abuse and recovery issues
  10. Previous experience in a residential treatment/residential setting is desirable
  11. Experience working within a non-profit and/or social services environment preferred
  12. Strong interest in working with people in need of support
  13. Ability to work effectively with people from various abilities, life situations and cultural backgrounds
  14. Commitment to understand and uphold the mission and values of House of Friendship is expected

Rate of Pay:

At House of Friendship all compensation ranges are categorized under a series of “grades” and we base our payment structure on internal equity. When determining rate of pay, a candidate’s past related experience will be taken into consideration along with where others with similar experience are currently on the pay grid. Note: Most new team members will start somewhere between the start rate and the mid-point of the range.

Grade: 5

Min: $26.24

Mid: $30.11

Max: $33.98

Working Conditions:

  • 37.5 hours per week, generally daytime hours
  • Required to work intensively with program participants in emotionally charged situations
  • Required to assess situations and make decisions under pressure with minimal supervision or working alone • Required to meet with participants in their homes and in the community for some programs
  • Travel within Waterloo Region and Wellington County required for some programs
  • Encountering participants at program sites who may be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, and/or experiencing symptoms of mental illness can be expected
