We are seeking an individual who is committed to strength-based, person focused care to join our team. House of Friendship provides treatment services for individuals who are concerned about their substance use or engage in problem gambling or technology overuse, and their families. This position may also involve providing support to new and expectant mothers. These services include; individual counselling, group counselling, and assessment and referral. Services are provided in the Region of Waterloo. Bi-weekly individual supervision is provided, as well as opportunities for professional development.
** This is a full-time, contract position from August 16, 2021 until December 31, 2021. Schedule will be typically Monday to Friday day time hours (8:30am – 4:30pm), with 1 evening (12:00pm – 8:00am) per week. **

Your key responsibilities include:
- Providing harm reduction-based psychotherapeutic support to participants
- Individual and Group Counselling
- Substance Use Assessments, Screening and Referrals
- Developing Treatment Plans collaboratively with participants
- Develop and Implement Workshops and Counselling Groups
- Family Counselling and support
- Documentation and Clinical Data Entry
- To provide support to maintain housing stability in permanent and transitional housing settings
- Responsible for supporting program participants to utilize community resources
- Working in collaboration with other program staff internally (HOF) and externally (Thresholds Homes and Supports and the Region of Waterloo)
- House of Friendship organization responsibilities
Your skills and experience include:
- University Degree in Counselling/Social Work with professional certification/registration is required (RSW, RP)
- Knowledge of CBT and/or problem gambling, gaming and technology overuse attained through education and/or work experience is preferred
- Valid G class driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle required
- Ability to calmly assess complex situations and make appropriate decisions independently
- Experience in individual and group counselling with demonstrated ability to establish strong, therapeutic rapport
- Open to understanding the challenges that may be experienced by women parenting
- Knowledge of the impact of prenatal and parental substance use on child development
- Sensitivity to and knowledge of issues relating to and impacting both men and women is required
- Knowledge of substance abuse, mental health and recovery issues is required
- Commitment to strength based and participant focused harm reduction approach
- Knowledge of community resources and provincial addiction treatment services
- Previous experience in addiction and/or mental health services and harm reduction is desired
- Current First Aid certificate or willingness to obtain at hiring
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required
- Experience working within a not-for-profit and/or social services environment preferred
- Desire and ability to work sensitively and effectively with people from various abilities, life situations and cultural backgrounds
- Commitment to understand and uphold the mission and values of House of Friendship is expected
Working Conditions:
- Required to work intensively with program participants sometimes in emotionally charged situations
- Required to assess situations and make decisions under pressure with minimal supervision
- Required to work a mix of remote work, office-based work, and work in the community
- Travel throughout the region as needed and so a valid driver’s licence and access to reliable vehicle is required.
